RDY4WAR's Drag Focus Build

Post by RDY4WAR on 2012-06-10, 12:44 pm

Welcome to my build thread. This will be mostly for my engine build but I will also post the other specs of the car on here as well.

A brief history:

I bought my Focus new in February 2007 in Monterey, CA. It is the base model with no A/C, manual transmission, manual locks and windows, and cloth interior. I have driven this car from California to Texas to Maryland and several trips back and forth from Maryland to Mississippi and Oklahoma. I bought this car with the intention of it being a reliable daily driver that got good gas mileage, however, those plans changed in 2008. I started to mod the car and have had alot of fun with it ever since. Without further adue, here is the mod list and some pics.

I'm gonna post up the details of my engine build for the first time to the public. I've kept the research and testing that I've done to myself and a select few others for a while now but release some of the info here. There's still some info I want to keep to myself until I finish the idea.

Engine build specs:
- Duratec 2.0L
- Wiseco 10:1 pistons w/ valve reliefs
- K1 forged rods
- Miata forged crankshaft
- Cosworth rod and main bearings
- ARP main and head studs
- Cometic .018" head gasket
- Ported 2.3L head
- Crower valve springs
- CFM adjustable cam gears
- Crane stage 3 cams (236/226 duration @ .050" lift, .435"/.410" lift, 110* LSA)
- Exedy stage 3 hyper-single clutch

The turbo selection for this build is still up in the air. Right now, I'm leaning towards a PTE5857 DBB billet wheel with an external 44mm wastegate dumped to atmosphere. This would be connected to a custom 3" v-band downpipe opening up to a 4" mid-pipe with a bullet muffler (as required) and dumped under the car.

The goal of the build is to have a wide and very useable powerband from 5,000-8,000rpm. I'm not too worried about spool up so long as I'm at full boost (25-28psi) by 5,000rpm. I'm looking for over 400wtq from 5,000-6,500rpm and over 450whp from 6,000-8,000rpm with smooth plateaus for each.

The ranger crank is a 2.3L 3.7" stroke crank and I'm building a 2.0L. Also, the ranger crank is cast vs the Miata crank is forged.

This engine build will be on hold until at least next fall. I got my approval letter to Hobart Welding Institute in Ohio so I'll be away for school and certs for the next year. With the certification though, I will be looking to make my own tubular turbo manifold and downpipe.

My best full 1/4 mile pass is still from 2 years ago.

1/4: 12.93 @ 105mph
1/8: 8.29 @ 87mph
60ft: 1.93

My best 1/8 mile pass was this past April but had to let up at half track because the clutch didn't want to grab in 4th gear.

1/4: 13.22 @ 78mph
1/8: 7.74 @ 93mph
60ft: 1.84 (spinning)

The car has 12.0-12.2 potential as it sits. With the build, I just want to get it to 11.50 index and let it be. The Mustang will be getting built after that.

Yeah, he has the record. His car is faster than that, just needs to get a full pass from it. I wish I had the will to get my racing weight down as light as his. I currently sit about 200lbs heavier w/ driver.

I shift to 4th gear right after the 1/8th mile. I have a 4.06 gear, 24.5" tall slicks, shifting at 7600rpm.

I'm in the same boat, really. I can't wait to get this motor built for the Focus so I can start building a motor for the Mustang. lol
